Gospel singer Kambua believes that for one to be a gospel singer, it must be a calling and not just a talent for singing.
According to the singer, the reason why Kenyan gospel singers have been hit with numerous scandals over the years is because most of them go into this kind of music based on their talent and not having received a calling from the Supreme Being to do the service.

“One thing I always emphasise and what I’m very clear on is that being a gospel artiste has to be a calling,” Kambua argues.
“If it’s just based on your talent, then when things get tough, you’ll quit and you’ll keep singing different kinds of music. But if it’s really a calling that God has put on your heart, then no matter what happens, no matter the season, you will stay the course,” she explains.

Kambua also insists that as a gospel artiste with a calling, one should never worry if their songs become huge or massive hits.
“It also means that being a gospel artiste, having that calling could mean that your music at that point in time is meant for that one person or those two people. Sometimes we just get caught up in the masses, ‘is my song getting a million views’, sometimes it could be 10 views but 10 very impactful views. So staying true to the basics and the calling,” she adds.

The chanteuse, who burst into the gospel limelight 19 years ago with her hit song Nishikilie, insists that despite the huge negative publicity she has received, a lot of good things have happened in the Kenyan gospel industry.
“There have been great things that I have witnessed as much as the gospel industry has received a lot of negative publicity. We must also acknowledge that there are people who have contributed greatly and positively,” Kambua says.
